Overview
Patriots,
This was a genuinely consequential week, a state visit from China's leader, a real First Amendment ruling, and growing cracks in Republican unity over the Iran war just five weeks before the midterms. Here's what actually happened, without the spin either side wants to sell you.

Xi Comes to Washington — Lots of Pageantry, Little Substance

Sea mine in the Strait of Hormuz.
Xi Jinping landed at Joint Base Andrews Wednesday for his first Washington visit in eleven years, and Trump broke protocol to personally greet him on the tarmac. A B-2 Spirit and four F-22 Raptors flew overhead. Melania Trump hosted Xi's wife, Peng Liyuan, and the two leaders had tea in the Red Room before viewing America's founding documents together at the National Archives.
The substance was thinner. The only concrete outcome was a two-month extension of the trade truce that had been set to expire in November. Trump called the visit "very productive" and said "our farmers are going to be very happy," but he never addressed Taiwan publicly, even after Xi called on the U.S. to oppose Taiwan independence in Beijing's own readout of the talks. China's summary of the meeting mentioned discussions on the Middle East but conspicuously left out any reference to the Iran war. One Chinese academic called the "bottom line" of avoiding military conflict the summit's most significant outcome, which tells you how low expectations had sunk going in.
